Bourbon is true American Whiskey and we’re proud to stock one of the originals, Michter’s, at The Distillery Bar in Beijing. According to legend, Michter’s bourbon is based on a recipe that goes back to the late 1700s and it was General George Washington that personally paid a visit to the distillery (then named Shenk’s) and bought whiskey to help fortify his troops through the long winter at Valley Forge and thus became “the Whiskey that helped warm the Revolution”. From then the bourbon brand changed ownership and names throughout the years, suffered bankruptcy during prohibition, and it wasn’t until the 1990s that the brand and bourbon was resurrected to its small batch craft glory.

Working as a media marketing professional during my day job, I’m all about a good old brand story any day however many will argue that the link to the original Shenk’s bourbon is quite stretched at best. But let’s face it, whether you believe the spin or not what’s most important when you step up to the bar is whether this American bourbon is going to deliver.

and it does.

The nose of the bourbon gives light notes of sweet corn, caramel & butterscotch, and some old woody oak or pine. There’s a little bit of sourness that’s unusual but interesting at the sametime.

As for the palate, you’ll enjoy a rich sweet and spicy tones with a tinge of cinnamon and ginger. After a rich and tasty experience on the palate, the finish is where Michter’s bourbon really delivers. The aftertaste is dominated by the smell and taste of toasted old wood and fresh pine, with a touch of musky leather; very warming and memorable.

It’s interesting to note that Michter’s is one of the few bourbon distilleries that takes it’s oak barrels super seriously . They only use wood that’s been aged for as long as 18-36 months and toast the barrel before it’s charred to give more caramelized flavor to the bourbon.

Come by The Distillery in Beijing and try a glass of this revolutionary Bourbon. Whether it really warmed the hearts of George Washington’s troops or not, it’ll definitely warm your heart during a cold bitter Beijing winter!
